The Portrait
“It’s a poor village in the north-east. The school is very precarious. The children – those who don’t work – are left with a lot of free time. The adults’ main entertainment is the bar where they play music and dance the night away. The young people have left in search of work. It’s a sad place.”
Portrait (What You Can’t See) is part of a photo that captures four children, a baby and a dog. Oh, and a kite. The description of the characteristics and temperament of each person portrayed immediately wins over the reader. Without much conversation, we get to know them in essence: the inventor, the bossy girl, the reader, the scruffy girl. Plus the pregnant dog and the borrowed baby (just for good measure). Oh, and the kite, which yearns for freedom. [journalist Rita Pimenta]
